Any interest in a cloth diaper service in Methuen, MA?

February 13th, 2010

My husband and I have been seriously discussing expanding our business to include a cloth diaper service. We are wondering if there is enough interest in the local community to sustain such a business.

Are you a parent or an expecting parent in the Merrimack Valley (Methuen, Lawrence, Haverhill, Amesbury, Lowell, Dracut, Andover, N. Andover, Amesbury, etc.) who is looking for a cloth diaper service? If so, please leave a comment below (you don’t need to leave any personal information). Let us know that you are interested, and how much you would expect to pay for such a service.

Thanks!

Spotlight: Bummis Cloth Diaper Covers

January 24th, 2010

New in our house this week are four Bummis cloth diaper covers. When Wesley was newborn, we used covers from a different diaper company and, for the past seven months, we have been using PUL covers that I made myself. I have to admit, these new Bummis covers are greatly superior!

We have been using two different types of Bummis covers, the Super Whisper Wrap (SWW) and the Super Brite (SB). They come in really cute colors and fun prints!
Bummis Super Whisper Wrap colors and printsThe Super Whisper Wrap is a VERY dependable cloth diaper cover with a proven track record. A mainstay in any 2 part cloth diapering system, it combines extreme functionality and the latest in cloth diapering technology with fun and colourful prints. And this premium but affordable cloth diapering product not only looks marvellous, but also has a remarkably good fit on most babies.

Bummis Super Brite Diaper Cover ColorsThe SUPER BRITE was designed to ensure a perfectly diapered fit – especially for those long, skinny hard-to-fit babies that need a little extra protection around the leg. This gusseted cover closes all the gaps, and you will find the fit of this cloth diaper cover like no other! Our gusset with lycra binding is an innovative design that wraps softly around baby’s leg with a lot less bulk than normal gussets and no elastic to leave marks on baby’s tender skin – only soft form-fitting lycra. The result is a very trim, great looking cloth diaper cover.

I can’t wait to get a few more of these covers for Wesley. And, one day, to get a full set for the next baby!

Do you use Bummis cloth diapers? Leave a comment and tell us your favorite Bummis product!

my boys!

I call them ‘baby cakes’!

January 17th, 2010

The baby loves pancakes. He eats them whole, stuffing them into his face just as fast as he can. He especially enjoys them with bananas and cinnamon, so I just made up a whole bunch for him to eat for breakfast this week.

Wesley and his pancakes!

Wesley loves to eat pancakes for breakfast.

Here’s the recipe, given to me by my best girlfriend, who makes this for her children who have both celiacs disease as well as food allergies. Thanks, Dee!

Ingredients:
3 tbsp apple sauce
1 tsp baking powder

3/4 cup rice milk
1/4 cup oil

1 cup gluten-free flour blend
2 tsp baking powder
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt

1 ripe banana, mashed roughly or diced
1 dash cinnamon

Directions:
Mix the first two ingredients together in a small bowl; set aside. Mix the next two ingredients together in another small bowl; set aside. Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Add the applesauce mix and the liquids into the dry ingredients and mix just until the lumps are gone. Add the bananas and cinnamon, blend.

Drop the batter onto a hot, well-greased griddle 1-2 tablespoons at a time. Flip after the batter bubbles and starts to dry around the edges. Cook until golden brown. (Makes approximately 24-30 silver dollar-sized pancakes.)

banana-cinnamon allergy-free pancakes ready to be frozen

Freeze your pancakes to enjoy all week!

Lay out the hot pancakes in one layer on a large cookie sheet and place into the freezer. When the pancakes are frozen, you can put them into a plastic container or plastic bag to keep in the freezer for about one week. Thaw frozen pancakes by placing them into the microwave for 20 – 30 seconds on half power.

When I make these for the baby, I usually add bananas, but I have also made them with chopped bits of cooked apples or pears. When I make these for myself and my husband, I include frozen or fresh blueberries. When I make them for my teenage son, he insists on chocolate chips. Yummy!

Cloth Diaper Registry!

January 11th, 2010

I’ve found that when you have a baby, people want to buy you gifts. Lots of gifts. I’ve also found from experience that a baby only needs so many onesies, hats, and socks! Here is where the baby registry comes in…

Today, most expecting parents register at major-name and big-box stores in order to make it easier for their friends and families to purchase gifts for their baby. My feeling has always been that if I’m going to buy you a gift, I would also hope that it is something that you need. The registry is there to help those of us who want to purchase something for the new mom get her what she wants and/or needs, rather than something that is going to have to be returned.

If you are planning on using cloth diaper once your baby is born, then the major baby registries aren’t going to be very helpful to you. What you need is to find a cloth diaper store that hosts registries. (I suggest Merrimack Valley Diapers!) Once you have found a place to register comes the big question… ‘What do I register for?’

Here are a few different registry ideas…

Registry #1 – Basic plan for a newborn

  • 24-36 cotton prefold diapers. More diapers means more days between doing the wash!
  • 4-6 waterproof diaper covers. Meant to keep your little one’s clothes dry and contain poopy messes!
  • 2-6 fitted diapers. These are great for use at night… who wants to be fumbling with pins or Snappis in the dark at 3:00 am?
  • 1-2 Snappi diaper fasteners. These are great for holding prefold diapers closed – no need for pins!
  • Accessories: 1-2 diaper pail liners or hanging wet bags, 1-2 small wetbags for the diaper bag, 1-2 changing pads, 12-36 cloth wipes, etc.

Registry #2 – Basic Plan PLUS (great for dads/grandparents/caretakers)

  • 12-24 cotton prefold diapers. More diapers means more days between doing the wash!
  • 2-4 waterproof diaper covers. Meant to keep your little one’s clothes dry and contain poopy messes!
  • 1-3 fitted diapers. These are great for use at night… who wants to be fumbling with pins or Snappis in the dark at 3:00 am?
  • 1-2 Snappi diaper fasteners. These are great for holding prefold diapers closed – no need for pins!
  • 8-12 pocket diapers. Pocket diapers go on just like disposable diapers, making it easy for helpers to change the baby, too!
  • Accessories: 1-2 diaper pail liners or hanging wet bags, 1-2 small wetbags for the diaper bag, 1-2 changing pads, 12-36 cloth wipes, etc.

Registry #3 – Birth to Potty-Learning Plan

  • 24-36 One Size (OS) diapers. These diapers can be adjusted for size, and fit most babies from sizes newborn through toddler. Never need to buy bigger sizes!
  • Accessories: 1-2 diaper pail liners or hanging wet bags, 1-2 small wetbags for the diaper bag, 1-2 changing pads, 12-36 cloth wipes, etc.

No matter which plan you prefer, register for you diapers early enough so that you can have all of your diapers washed and prepped before your little one makes her/his appearance!
